REUSE OF HAMIDIYE MOSQUE IN THE CASTLE OF CHIOS

Hamidiye or Mbairakli Mosque is located in the center of the Castle of Chios and has been declared a monument worthy of preservation (Government Gazette 386/Β/15-4-1999). It was founded in 1892 and replaced a Christian church that stood in this location. It is a single-hall building, covered with a tile roof on the exterior, and a blind, timber-framed plastered dome on the interior.

The project “Reuse of Hamidiye Mosque in the Castle of Chios” is part of the North Aegean Region Special Purpose Development Program 2017-2020 of the Ministry of Economy an Development, and will be executed with own means and on an ex-post budget basis by the Ephorate of Antiquities of Chios, with a budget of 400,000, 00 € and projected completion date October 2020.

Upon completion of the project, the mosque will function as a cultural space and house cultural events.
