The Castle of Chios in the most important monument in the city of Chios, and the most impressive fortification work in the entire island. The part of the land walls that will be restored extends from Bastion A to Bastion C, and is the most prominent part of the monument as it is directly visible from the port of the city, and from its commercial center.

The project will consist of moderate architectural interventions, such as cleaning, consolidation, repointing, crack repair, and local rebuilding, which will render the monument safe and accessible to the general public. The Central Gate of the Castle (Porta Maggiore) will also be conserved and enhanced.

DAY EVENT ON THE CASTLE OF CHIOS

The Ephorate of Antiquiteis of Chios, on Friday August 17th 2018, is organizing a day event dedicated to the Castle of Chios with the title “Research findings from the recent projects in the land walls of the Castle of Chios”.

Over the last year and a half, the Ephorate is carrying out the restoration project of the land walls under the European Community Partnership Agreement 2014-2020 program. During this day event, the three supervisors of the project will present new findings that came to light during the project.

The Director of the Italian Archaeological School Emanuele Papi will be an honored guest; he will present and talk on the contribution of the Italian School and Italian scholarship to the research on the Castle and the medieval monuments of Chios.

The day event will be held in the “Dark Prison” of the Castle of Chios at 11:00; there will be a reception at the end of the event.

Admission free of charge.

Europe in my region 2017 (#EUinMyRegion) is a Europe-wide communication campaign that aims to encourage the public to discover and learn more about the projects co-funded by the European Union in their region. More than 20 countries, including Greece, take part in this campaign.

In Chios, on 30-7-2017, there will be a guided tour of the “Restoration and enhancement project of the Land walls of the Castle of Chios” by archaeologists and engineers of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Chios.

His Excellency the President of Greece, Mister Prokopis Pavlopoulos will honor the event with his presence.
