EUROPEAN CULTURAL HERITAGE DAYS 2015 THE JEWISH COMMUNITY OF CHIOS AND ITS TIMELESS IMPRINT

The Ephorate of Antiquities of Chios is once again participating in the celebration of European Cultural Heritage Days 2015 which has set as an aim to strengthen the bond between the countries of Europe and broaden the scope of intercultural dialogue.

The theme of European Cultural Heritage Days for 2015-2016 is the dipole “Violence and Tolerance”, a multifaceted subject both in terms of ideology, and practice.

The celebration offer an opportunity to promote the ideal of tolerance, manifested in the respect of Others’ beliefs, acceptance of difference and diversity, and the permission of free speech in communities. Violence, both extreme and mild, is, sadly, prevalent in Eupopean history, in the isolation and even the extermination of different racial, ethnic, religious and social groups.

The Ephorate of Antiquities of Chios has elected to dedicate this year’s celebration to the “Jewish community of Chios and it timeless imprint”. The feature on this delicate subject will last from Friday 25th to Sunday 27th of September 2015, and will include the following events:

Friday 25/9: Briefing of school groups, with a first stop at the Jewish Synagogue in the city of Chios, and a second stop at the “Dark Prison” in the Castle of Chios

Saturday 26/9: Presentation of the Jewish Synagogue and the thematic subject to local media

Sunday 27/9: Public screeenign of presentation on the material remains, the presence and growth of the Jewish element in Chios, in the “Dark Prison” space in the Castle of Chios. The screening will start at 11:00.

The Jewish Museum of Greece and its curator Ms. Anastasia Loudarou will also participate in the events.

During the three-day celebration of the European Cultural Heritage Days 2015, entrance to the museums and archaeological sites of the Ephorate will be free of charge.
