EUROPEAN CULTURAL HERITAGE DAYS 2016 IMPRINTS OF THE REFUGEES OF THE ASIA MINOR CAMPAIGN OF 1922 IN THE CASTLE OF CHIOS

The Ephorate of Antiquities of Chios is participating in the celebration of European Cultural Heritage Days 2016 by organizing a feature on the imprints left behind in the Castle of Chios, by the refugees of the Asia Minor Campaign of 1922. The feature will be presented on Friday 23rd and Sunday 25th of September, and include the following events:

Friday 23/9: Guided tours of school groups are the locations/buildings in the Castle of Chios where refugees of of the Asia Minor Campaign of 1922 left their imprints. The departure point will be the Ottoman School.

Sunday 25/9: Event in the Ottoman School of th Castle from 11:00 to 12:00, on the Ottoman Mbairakli Mosque in the Castle, that hosted a refugee family of Armenian descent. The event will include:

a)      A talk on the history and architecture of the Ottoman mosque, and a presentation of its restoration proposal by its researcher, architect Mr. Stavros Vasilakis.

b)     Video screening narrated by the last resident of the mosque.

During the three-day celebration of the European Cultural Heritage Days (23 to 25 September 2016), entrance to the museums and archaeological sites of the Ephorate will be free of charge.
