The church of Panagia with the epithet “Krena” is located in the rural area of the settlements of Vavyloi in central Chios. It is one of the most important monuments of the island, but also of Byzantine architecture in general. It was built in the same typology as the Katholikon of Nea Moni, and thus belongs to the type of octagon churches. The differences from its prototype lie in the support of the dome on the east; in the case of Krena this is done via a tall barrel vault. The church is composed of a main church and an esonarthex built shortly one after the other, sometime in the late 12th century.
