THE HARBOR SANCTUARY AT EMPORIO

The excavation carried out between 2002-2006 in the Vasilis land-plot at the foot of the prehistoric acropolis, approximately 60 m SE of the sanctuary, brought to light remains that belong to three consequtive building phases, extending from the Late Bronze Age to the early 5th century B.C. Massive retaining walls that probably make up the boundaries of the sanctuary complex are included in the last building phase. A destruction layer dated to the second half of the 6th century B.C. discovered among these walls, can be a attributed to an extensive cleanup of the Archaic temple that was destroyed in 493 B.C.

Some of the most important archaeological finds are two marble Kouroi statues, and part of the left bent arm of a Kore statue. The discovery of the sherd of a black-figure, Droop-type kylix in the same layer, with en engraved inscription of the name of the god “ΙΕΡΗ ΑΠΟΛΛΩΝΟΣ” and numerous other sherds with inscriptions confirms the votive character of the marble statues as well.
