“ENVIRONMENT AND CULTURE”: GLORIOUS STORIES OF FIRE

The Ministry of Culture and Sports, in order to promote natural and cultural heritage, is organizing the exposition “Environment and Culture” around Greece; this year’s theme is fire. The title “The glow of creative fire – Glorious stories of fire” is inspired by the tragedy Prometheus Bound by Aeschylus, and the relevant quote that eloquently describes the nature of fire that endowed mankind with power, knowledge, and art, and illuminated culture with its glow.

On the occasion of the “Environment and Culture” exposition, the Ephorate of Antiquities of Chios is organizing a temporary exhibitin with the title “Lighting sources from Antiquity to the 19th century in the collections of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Chios”, in the “Giustiniani Palace” in the Castle of Chios; the exhibition will be open for one year. The archaeological finds on display are related to light as a timeless symbol of fire, and come from the collections of the Archaeological and the Byzantine Museums of the Ephorate. The exhibition includes a copper oil-lamp from a private collection that was graciously lended to complement the other exhibits.

High school students will be given guided tours of the Exhibition on Friday 21/10/2016.

Throughout the four-day celebration of “Environment and Culture 2016. The glow of creative fire – Glorious stories of fire” (20-23 October 2016) admission to the “Giustiniani Palace” will be free of charge.
