EUROPEAN CULTURAL HERITAGE DAYS 2017 PARTHENIS RIVER, A GIFT OF LIFE FOR THE CITY OF CHIOS IS PERISHING

The theme of European Cultural Heritage Days for 2017-2018 will be “CITI(ES)”, old and new, small and large, important or secondary, in order to provide a new narrative of their history, which will elicit inquiry and open up discussion subjects with respect to their transformation in the modern world and their future.

The Ephorate of Antiquities of Chios will participate in the celebration with a feature on the river Parthenis, a gift of life for the city of Chios that is perishing. In collaboration with the Omiroupoli Center for Environmental Education and the 3rd General High School of Chios, they will organize an event with the church of Agios Georgios Katadotis as departure point. A team of archaeologists from the Ephorate of Antiquities of Chios will walk along the banks of Parthenis river, in a retrospect on its history, and will discuss the monuments that had been founded on its banks, and offer guided tours of the recent findings brought to light by excavations. Following this walk, the participants will discuss the environmental aspects of the ongoing project of contructing a bypass road of the city of Chios over Parthenis river, and its repercussions on the natural and cultural landscape of Chios.
